Few things ruin a Naples afternoon faster than an air conditioner blowing warm air. Before you panic, work through the seven causes we see most often — a couple take two minutes to check, and the rest tell you it’s time to call a tech.
1. Thermostat settings
It sounds basic, but check it first: the system should be set to COOL, and the fan to AUTO. With the fan on ON, air keeps blowing between cooling cycles — and that uncooled air feels like a warm-air problem.
2. A clogged air filter
A filter choked with dust starves your system of airflow and can freeze the coil solid. In Florida, check filters monthly during cooling season. If yours is grey and matted, swap it and give the system an hour.
3. A tripped breaker
Your outdoor unit has its own breaker. If it tripped, the indoor fan still blows — warm. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop there and call: a breaker that keeps tripping is a symptom, not the disease.
4. A dirty outdoor condenser
Salt air, grass clippings, and landscaping debris coat the outdoor coil until it can’t dump heat. If the fins look furred over, the system needs a proper cleaning, not just a hose blast.
5. Low refrigerant
Refrigerant doesn’t get ‘used up’ — low charge means a leak. Ice on the copper line is the tell. This is licensed work: the leak has to be found and fixed, not just topped off.
6. A frozen evaporator coil
Ice on the indoor coil blocks airflow and the air that does get through stays warm. Turn the system OFF and the fan ON to thaw it. Running a frozen system can take the compressor with it.
7. A failing capacitor or compressor
Humming, clicking, hard starts, or an outdoor unit that won’t start at all point at electrical components. These need testing, not guessing.
